Most people would rather get confused as to whether certain words are singular in form or plural.
For examples, let's consider the words "police", "team".
Say: The Police is working hard to arrest the criminal (not "are")
The team is good enough to win the league (not "are").
I'm sure you feel the nouns should take on "are".
NB: Note that the words "police"and "team" suggest plurality, although having a singular structure.
